about

"3 Bands, 3 Songs, 3 Bucks -- every month!"

The 3-Way Singles Club sweeps into August with a mini-mixtape of sounds: from the shoegazey haze of Regretters' "Broken Metronome," to Middleman's flowing acoustic "Haiti," To Jake Simmins & The Little Ghosts' succinct, storming "Your Fucking Song."

Regretters are a part-time project uniting cousin labels Bermuda Mohawk Productions and Good Time Gang Recordings. Appearing first on Bermuda Mohawk's annual Christmas album in 2011, the blend of interesting sounds, pacing, dreamlike vocals evokes all sorts of atmospheres at once. Of "Broken Metronome" in particular, bandmember Craig Horky described it as "music recorded by drunk ghosts." They are a group I would love to see record extensively, creating more music that would make the late Cynthia Dall proud.

Middleman is the solo act of Michael Boyes, who we heard from in his band Drinking Mercury a few volumes ago. Rather than one being an extension of the other, Middleman seems to be its own distinct creature, at times pastoral and seeking and at other times salted with wordplay and wisps of cosmic nature. "Haiti" is a melodic meditation that merits lots of repeat plays, as you'll soon discover.

And putting a cork on this month's volume of the series is the ever-so-slightly twangy punk-pop anthem "Your Fucking Song" from Jake Simmons & The Little Ghosts. Conjuring the spirits of The Clash and Drive By Truckers and swirling them together in an erlenmeyer flask, Simmons and crew invite us to take a deep draught of this stinging, bracing brew.

This is always the case, but I don't know if I explicitly say it -- it is a really big honor to work with this month's artists, and to document a little facet of what they each do. One of the main ideas of the singles club is that it will set up signposts for these artists: they all gig and put out records and compilation tracks and the rewards for exploration are numerous. Find them elsewhere too!
